Gravel Road Farm News July 9th, 2021

Posted on July 9th, 2021 by Brigid Ferkett

We are harvesting a lot of early summer crops right now, kohlrabi, salad turnips, lettuce and fresh basil. We will have a lot of cucumbers still at the market and beets. The deer are challenging us at night, munching on our field grown beets and lettuces. We always over plant so that we have enough for our vegetable boxes.

New this week is zucchini in limited amounts. We pick the zucchini small and tender for grilling, etc. (Bigger ones for baking will be coming along later in the season.) Also new this week is napa cabbage, a tender curly green in between lettuce and regular cabbage. Great for fermenting, or fresh eating.

The flowers are in full force this week. We will have a grand selection at the market, and the bouquet CSA starts next week on Tuesday. It's not too late to sign up! Sunflowers galore, lucious snapdragons, bright zinnias and pops of blue to complete the rainbow. They are like fireworks that you can hold in your hand and last for a week. Our kids are going to be setting up their own art and cookie sales this week. They are enjoying making things and they have fun selling them too
