Farm Happenings for week of September 9, 2020

Posted on September 5th, 2020 by Naomi Martz

Well, it's a new week on the farm and things are a'happening.  The horses are horsing, the cat is mousing, the dog is supervising, and we humans are doing lots of harvesting.  There are squashes starting to come in from the field (the mice have nibbled a few here and there, but they look and taste delicious), potato harvest is nearly complete, and in another week or two we will have leeks on the table.  We are loving the hot days and cool nights, which makes for a fresh early morning harvest, plenty of midday veggie washing and processing, and an hour or two in the afternoon to clean garlic and onions or work on farm projects in the shade.

We celebrated farm cat Sally's fifth birthday last week, after which farm crew member Olivia wrapped up her summer working with us and left on a bicycle trip adventuring around BC.  Kate, Matt, and Sarah have all stepped up their game as we tackle big harvests together, and especially so this week as I (Naomi) am taking a few days off the farm to visit with family and have a bit of a holiday on Vancouver Island to rejuvenate after a very busy summer.  You're in good hands!  For our Squamish pick up, Kate will be running the show as usual, and say hi to Matt who will be taking a break from field work to help out at A-FRAME (he's been working at the farm since June).  If you're keen to talk about cooking and plant-based recipes, Matt's your guy, and be sure to give him a huge THANK YOU for all the hard work he's been putting in to grow for you this year.

It's definitely a time of transition for farm-fresh foods, as some of our summer crops wind down (zucchinis and beans have nearly petered out), and we try to wait for a light frost to sweeten up brussel sprouts and watermelon radishes.  Squashes will definitely start becoming a staple on the harvest list, and if you need any help getting inspired about cooking certain varieties of squash, don't hesitate to ask.

Finally, a WELCOME to our fall harvest share members who are joining us for the first time this week.  Please be sure to read your pick up or delivery instructions in your confirmation email, be kind and patient if things take a few extra minutes as our staff step up to fill different roles this week, and, of course, enjoy the vegetables!

Thank you for being part of the farm-ily
