Farm Happenings for Week of June 16, 2020

Posted on June 13th, 2020 by Sarah Rider

Lot's of new items to choose from this week. We have cilantro, dill, basil, and scallions coming ready and in the share. For cooking greens you can choose kale or chard, or both. A coleslaw of napa cabbage and kohlrabi is always an option, or this week you can pick a head of green cabbage. All the other standards are still kicking, like lettuce, salad mixes, and turnips.

On the horizon are red potatoes, cucumbers, and squash and zucchinis; and a come back of the carrots. This week will be beets again so the carrots can get a little larger.

Our farm crew has done a great job of transitioning from our winter/spring routine to the heavier load of the summer work. We harvest and pack vegetables almost everyday, and in the spare hours we get the rest of the farm work done.

Tending to the laying hens is a daily chore. Christian moves the chicken train in the morning and refills the hens' feeders. He also keeps an eye on their water supply and oyster shell supply for calcium. In the afternoons we collect the eggs and package them daily. This year, the new nest-box design has kept the eggs a lot cleaner, which means quicker packaging and less scrubbing.

It was another dry week on the farm, even though some of our friends farms saw several inches of rain last week. We hope a shower or two comes our way soon!

That's all for now,

Tom
