Farm Happenings for Week of June 8, 2020

Posted on June 5th, 2020 by Sarah Rider

I'm afraid to say that the strawberries my have come and gone. What a dismal year for them! They got hit hard by two frosts this spring and I think we lost a lot of fruit.

However, this week we are offering peas and broccolini in the shares. The peas will be a mix of snow and snaps, both with edible pods. Broccolini is excellent sauteed, eat the whole thing, leaves, stems, flowers.

I finished plowing the one acre patch for the winter squash today. It was the roughest plowing this year, as that field always is because it is full of rocks. The rocks make for a bumpy ride on the plow, but they make it even more uncomfortable for the horses. So we took many breaks and spread the job out over 4 days, mostly plowing late in the evening to avoid the heat of the day.

Lots of sweet potatoes went in the ground this week. Orange, white, and purples. Plus of few extra rows sprinkled around the farm cause we had lots of leftover plants. We also put in the summer planting of kale and soon we'll put in the summer planting of chard. We tweaked our planting schedule from last year to avoid having to skip a few weeks of cooking greens in the summer months.

Second planting of tomatoes is in too. We're going to swimming in tomatoes. But I shouldn't count my glass houses before I through them into the bush.

Coming soon will be zukes and squash. I'm looking for the scallions to grow, but they haven't been cooperating. At least the lettuce is producing! Isn't that stuff great?!

Alright, till next time,

Tom
