Farm Happenings for Week of June 2, 2020

Posted on May 30th, 2020 by Sarah Rider

Whew! What a week!  It is overwhelming to see the sheer quantity of food leaving the the farm and heading to your table. There were a lot of new systems in place and the inevitable hiccups, but pretty awesome to  get rolling for the season. Thanks for all of you for hanging with us while we chug along and make the needed corrections as quickly as possible.

A few updates & notes to mention:

Boxes - Tentatively, yes, we are starting to take them back again. This may vary location to location depending on the procedures of the host of the site, but we'll contact you if your site can not handle them. If you are coming out to the farm, that is easy....bring them along. If you are on a delivery route, you can leave out for the driver to pickup. We have a procedure at the farm to put them in storage for a time before reuse.

U-pick - We're making the painful decision to cancel u-pick for the season, at least for the early crops. U-pick can be tricky to manage in the best of times, but with the updated precautions we are taking to protect the farmers, crew, and our family, it is just too much for us to have CSA members in the field. The best news is that we have an awesome, professional crew this year, so we are able to pick things like strawberries, peas, green beans, etc. While we love to see you all in the field and know members enjoy the opportunity, the real reason these were always u-pick is that we never had the labor to feasibly pick these crops in any quantity. However, we do welcome you to walk the perimeter of the fields to get your farm-fix!

Home Delivery - We are now ready to roll with multiple home delivery routes. This project is a work in progress (That may be my theme of the year). We truly want to offer this service and make it work, so have set up several routes and are not charging a delivery fee until the end of June. We'll reassess then and if we have to add a fee, you would have the option to switch back to a pickup location. If you would like this option, please go to your Harvie profile page,  select  "Deliveries",  and click "Change Location".

Every Other Week Shares - We are  aware of the fact that many of you have every other week shares, or share add-ons. These did not line up in Harvie the way we expected, so you may still have at least one share to pickup each week. You can reschedule these things to line up, but we're also working with support @ Harvie to iron it out from our end, too.

News from the field- I love these long days and the constantly changing landscape. The plants are growing in inches a day. Crops are being transplanted almost every day. There are thousands of trellis going up in all the tomatoes. Tom is worrying that he planted way too many tomatoes, which I think is almost impossible. 'Tis the season for all things green, which makes the bright red radishes and orange carrots even more of a feast for the eyes.

That's all for now. Eat well, be well.
