Farm Happenings for September 14, 2022

Posted on September 12th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome to week 17 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

What's Happening?!

The farm is starting to look a little bit different with the cooler nights and moisture in the air.  The cucumbers and squash have started to die back, leaves are starting to yellow in preparation for autumn.  More of our late summer crops are finally ripening- yay!!! Corn and melons are ready this week.  More and more peppers and tomatoes are also starting to ripen.

We grow all of our corn from non-gmo seed (not genetically modified) and they are open pollinated (Meaning that they're not as hybridized and that you can save seed from them to re-grow yearly).  These varieties may not be candy sweet, but they sure are tasty and it's nice to know you're not getting any weird genes spliced in that make the corn able to withstand heavy application of harmful chemicals.

This year we decided to only grow watermelons because of the late seasonal start.  The melons are a short season variety of Organic/BioDynamic seeds from Territorial Seed Company in Oregon.  They are delicious and weigh around 3-5 lbs each.  These varieties do have seeds, which we actually prefer because you can re-plant these seeds year after year.   The cool nights have helped sweeten the melons and we're very excited to have them available this week!

Volunteer Day and Farm Tour is happening this Saturday in conjunction with the Harvest Celebration.   For a full map of all of the participating farms  and activities head to: go.wsu.edu/smallacreage

We will be hosting you-pick (or dig to be more exact) potatoes as well as games (disc golf, corn hole, and giant jenga), hot sauce tasting, and more this Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.  Come out to taste, play and visit your farmers!

The farm fridge will also be stocked with farm fresh goodies and flowers from Sprout & Blossom Farm.

Hope to see soon and enjoy this week's bounty <3
