Farm Happenings for September 21, 2022

Posted on September 19th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome to week 18 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

What's Happening?!

We harvested the last of the apples from a few of the trees in the orchard.  We think that they're a gala type (crisp and sweet- but with more flavor than the store bought types- almost like Christmas according to Patrick) and a McIntosh apple with a darker red skin and nice tart, juicy flavor.

Late summer and early Autumn are full of delicious veggies of all types.  It is definitely the most abundant time of year, the shares are colorful and the variety great.  The tomatoes are in full swing and peppers are ripening.  A lot of the greens we've been seeing all season are still going strong and new root veggies will soon be available.  A few of our specialty items that some people may not yet know are the Cukamelons (a cucumber that looks like a tiny watermelon but tastes like a crunchy cucumber - they make super yummy pickles or you can just eat them as is alone or in a salad) and the Ground Cherries/ Cape Gooseberries (relatives of the tomato and tomatillo with a papery husk but a small fruity berry inside that is eaten raw).  The Cape Gooseberries are a more upright plant that can get up to 4' tall and the fruit is a bigger size than the Ground Cherry.  They have a more complex flavor that is both tart and sweet.  The Ground Cherries are a shorter plant that crawls along the ground and make a smaller size berry that is very sweet, like brown sugar and tomatillo combined.

Salsa boxes will also be available this week.  They come with 10# of tomatoes, peppers, onion, garlic and cilantro.  You can choose your heat level (mild will include jalapenos/aji peppers and hot will include a super hot pepper).  Email us to let us know your preference heat level!

Other events coming up-

Farm Equinox Potluck!

We'd love to invite our members to come out to the farm to celebrate the harvest season with us.  This Farm to Table dinner will be a potluck where we will provide one veggie/fruit of your choice to make a dish to bring and share.  We welcome you to get creative and showcase what you've been doing with your CSA share items!

When/Where: This Sunday, Sept. 25th from 4 pm to 8 pm here at the farm

9400 NE 134th St. Vancouver WA 98662

What: Some of the produce you can choose from will be potatoes, peppers, apples, pears, tomatoes, greens (kale, collards, chard, greens) and more.

How: We will send out a full item list to those who RSVP to us before Tuesday night by emailing flattackfarm@gmail.com  We will then put the chosen item in your share (at no extra charge) so that you can create a potluck dish to share with others at the dinner on Sunday.  Please let us know how many will be joining with your party and the your first and second choice item.  Also, if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies, please let us know that as well.

With gratitude,

Kelly & Patrick
