Farm Happenings for September 7, 2022

Posted on September 5th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome back to week 16 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

What's Happening?!

We’ve got tons of beans!  Yellow Wax, Purple, Dragon and Green Pole Beans.  This summer crop is loving the heat and producing like crazy.  In the past we’ve only grown bush beans, that are about 2” tall and quite a “back breaker” to pick.  This year we also planted a row of climbing beans that we trellised to see if they would be a little easier on the back.  Those are the green beans you’ve been eating for the past couple of weeks.  The bush beans are now producing and we have some beautiful colors to add to the mix.  One of our favorite ways to cook beans is to cut off the stem tops and pan fry in a bit of oil and with lots of garlic, a dash of salt & pepper, and a bit of tamari or soy sauce for umami.  They’re simple, quick and absolutely delicious!

Also, if you missed last week's update- we are also super excited about the new batch of honey!  We are selling honey produced by bees on the farm in collaboration with The Vancouver Bee Project to help raise money for our pollinator and beneficial insect planting project.  Check out the details here: https://www.harvie.farm/admin/happening/show/27961

We've also got our first harvest of pears from the orchard!  They're a Bartlett type.  To ripen, just put in a paper bag and let sit on the counter for a few days.

Hope you enjoy this week’s goodies.
