Spring Flowers (and Aphids)

It’s Week 3 of the Spring Farm Share!

Administrative Details

Starting this coming week, we are packing into reusable cooler bags.  We’ll need you to either transfer your share into your own bags, or bring back the cooler bag next week.

What’s in the Box

We have a few strongly flavored, hotly debated veggies to feature this week.  Love them or hate them, the cilantro and arugula are both looking fine.  I can’t have taco’s without cilantro, and arugula is my fav for salad or pizza.  Hope you love them as much as I do.

On the Farm

On the bright side: we snuck in our first outdoor plantings between rain showers, transitioned many greenhouse beds from winter crops to spring ones (I'm particularly pumped about all the broccolini we've planted), and our grafted tomatoes came through the procedure with flying colors!

We planted 3,000 spring bulbs last fall and the first few are blooming.  It's beautiful and I love to imagine what it will look like in 5 years when they multiply further.

On the not-so-bright-side: one of our greenhouses has a serious aphid infestation.  We’ve gone through and treated the crops (mostly lettuce) with an organic insecticidal soap and ordered beneficial insects to clean up the survivors.  This means that my lettuce schedule is a a wee bit of a mess and we may need to ration for a little bit, I’m also going to place an order with a organic farm in the area to round things out- these items will be clearly marked and you can swap them out of your share if you’d rather just have our veggies
