Firmly Rooted Winter CSA - Week 7

Administration

If you are finding it hard to remember to pick up your share you can try setting a few alarms in your phone: one the morning of, and one 30 minutes before you typically collect your veggies. It'll work wonders!

What to Expect in Your Share

We are trying to clear out a variety of small winter squashes this week.  If you get squash you will either receive a mini butternut, acorn, or red kuri.  Sorry, no customizing which you get this time.  They are all good, just roast them and eat them!

Parsnips are back on offer this week, as is purple diakon radish.

This is the last week for arugula and spicy mesclun.  Our very last planting of these failed, however, we'll have salad mix and spinach to get us through until the end.

On the Farm

We survived the snow and are pushing to get the last veggies out of the field before it is here to stay.  As we work together to pull the last carrots, parsnips and other odds and ends our conversations often turn to 2021.

What new crops or varieties should we try? So far farmers votes are for different types of squash and eggplant, and maybe putting in a row of edamame.

What problems do we need to fix?  To start with we want a more abundant pepper year, need to address leek moth, and figure out how to keep the swede midge off the broccolini.

What do we want more of?  Broccoli, cucumbers, peppers (I'm really irritated about the peppers), and oddly, kohlrabi.  I love kohlrabi!

What about you?  What would like to see more of?  What should we try?  I'd love to hear from you.

That's all for now folks, happy eating until next time.
