Farm News This Week

Posted on September 26th, 2021 by Teresa Kurtak

Above is an updated photo of Teddy and Shadow our Livestock Guardian Pups in training.  It's hard to get the perspective right to accurately represent them in a photo.  They're now a bit over 8month and HUGE!  Also just about the sweetest and gentlest ever despite their enormous size.  Henri (the old man who isn't in this picture) is still elderly, but has a bit more of a spring in his step with them around :) They're mostly Pyrenees with about 20% Akbash.

We've decided to pull the plug on the Strawberries, they're just too slow to pick and sort to pay for the time picking :( .  Also, raspberries are trickling in, but pretty much over.  I'm going to leave a very cautious estimate of what we'll have available as extras, but there are no longer enough to put into the boxes.  Melons are just about over and this will likely be our last week of Seckel and Bartlett pears as well.

What's new?  Well, we've got bunching greens again :)  We're pulling up parsnips hopefully this week.  In this climate we have to give them a couple weeks of artificial chill in the cooler to get the sweetness up, so it'll be a couple weeks before they're available in your boxes.  We are also now fully in Winter Squash season.  This week I'm putting Sunshine Kabochas in the box.  They're most, sweet, a bit moister usually than the Buttercup.  The orange skin is very thin which means you can eat it and not worry about peeling it.  If you are making soup, just puree the skin right on in with the flesh. Or roasting, just cut it into pieces with the skin on.

8 Weeks left of our 2021 CSA Season!  Reminder, flower shares end earlier in just a few weeks so that we can get the fields tilled in  with time to cover crop and also shift into making dried floral wreaths and bouquets for the Holidays.  More on how to pre-order yours soon..
