Fun happenings on the farm:

Our neighbors Tomkat Ranch have brought their cows over to graze the pasture.  It's been fun to not only watch them happily reducing the work we'll have to do mowing once they're gone, but to know that all that grass isn't going to waste.  A bit over a year ago we moved our hens to what we call the "Back 40"- a parcel we are leasing and will hopefully be able to buy from POST on the other side of Butano Creek from the Home Ranch.  Neighbors and passersby have missed them (we still occasionally get questions about where they went) but it was way safer for Henri and his pups Teddy and Shadow.  Henri was getting out onto the road where we worried he might be hit by a car or stolen.  In addition the pasture was so wet during the Winter that we had to move the both coops to higher ground which was an arduous process and a bit nerve wracking as they then spent the Winter up on top of a hill with the coops perched at pretty steep angles.  Anyways, without the chickens, last year, all that grass was just mowed down.  It's nice to have some ruminants out there breaking it down into some lovely manure to feed back to the soil.

New Items in your boxes:

Potatoes are finally here!! We're going to put the red potatoes in this week and offer Purple Majesty (purple skin and flesh) as a swap option.  Next week you'll get the purple potatoes and the red's as a swap option.  The Yukon Gold were still a bit too delicate to harvest. So those will hopefully get harvested this week. Cucumbers and green beans are back in season too!  As farmers who grow most of the veggies we eat, we tend to eat pretty in season and I have to say I really do miss these summer crops.  I think we've lost a bit of connection to the seasons what with how vegetables are transported to us from every corner of the globe.  Pretty much at any point we want we can find most common vegetable crops at the grocery store.  While that convenience is amazing, there is definitely something we lose.  The excitement of seasonal food being available.. the pleasure of tasting something we haven't had in months and months while it's at it's peak flavor... the nostalgic memories of foods that are tied to seasons... We hope we can share a little of that delight with you by at least bringing you some of these seasonal foods when they should taste so much better than those shipped to you from Mexico or New Zealand.
