Thanksgiving Specials

Posted on September 30th, 2018 by Heather Coffey

You might notice some new treats this week, we're happy to bring in the first of our carrots, brussels, siberian kale (softer leaf), and pumpkins for all. It's a season worth celebrating with so much variety coming in from the fields. Happy long weekend to all!

We've got another four lovely weeks of our summer veggie boxes - the last Wednesday run is Oct 24th, and the last Saturday is Oct 27th. That means four more boxes for our weekly members, or two more for most of our bi-weeklies. So despite the dropping temperatures, know there's still a tasty month ahead.

We've been busy getting in all the potatoes, a solid winter supply. This year we've grown Nicola, Sieglinde, Russet, All Red, Roko, Purple Viking and French Fingerling potatoes. Each year the selection changes around as we notice which potatoes grow best in our fields. Agria was an old favourite but we found it was particularly susceptible to black scurf, due to our soils. So we've switched to Nicola for the last couple years and we love it. We also learnt that the earlier you dig your potatoes, the less scurf is likely to develop. We were also thinking, as we were harvesting, that the earlier we pull them the less the grubs are likely to find and eat them as the days cool off. While some folks had potatoes at market before us this year, this feels really early to have all the potatoes in from the fields.

Today we got our beds prepared to plant garlic, as well as all the garlic cracked. This year we didn't get any garlic (it was too wet to plant by the time we got to it last fall). So we're really excited to be planting it again soon. I remember planting it in December before, but this year we'll definitely beat that timing!

The garden is looking amazing and the winter CSA sign-ups are rolling in. I'm feeling really happy with the way fall is going. It's incredibly satisfying knowing we are feeding 100 families this thanksgiving, from our little farm. Thank you for being one of them, and happy feasting!
