Ebb and flow of harvests

Posted on August 5th, 2021 by Heather Coffey

I always love to see the potatoes flowering, we've had years when the plants are not doing well and they don't flower! This time of year we get a glimpse of what's to come - the squash, sweet potato, and regular potato patches are all thriving. A welcome relief after last year's shortages. Just to balance things out, the garlic went from ready to past ready within a week with all the rains... so we're not sure if quality will hold through the winter but we'll enjoy it while we can. Many of the heads have exposed cloves, as you probably noticed this week. They're easier to crack open at least this way!

Summer crops are in full swing too, we have oodles of beans and basil. This week we have our first celery, beautiful shade grown tender little stalks full of flavour. Some cauliflower too to share this week, with another round coming next week. Broccoli shoots are growing well, we're getting the hang of harvesting them and after the first week of tiny bundles we're much happier with bigger ones! The first green cabbage planting is wrapping up, but the red one is coming ready. Tomatoes are starting to ramp up slowly. The first round of cucumbers and zucchini are coming down off their peak, but we have more coming in a few weeks. Green onions are here to stay (that's fresh bulbs with greens on top), but we have some bonus scallions coming too if you prefer the little ones. Lots to choose from :)
