A Week in the Life of Your CSA Farm Share

Posted on July 5th, 2019 by Featherstone Farm

Thursday it all begins.  Nathan, our operations manager and crop allocater, scouts the crops and walks the fields, assessing what is ready for harvest and, with more difficulty, how much yield is going to come off a bed of carrots or a field of cabbage.   On Friday, based on what is available for the week ahead, we enter our projected inventory into our Harvie system, which will randomly assign each item to 800+ of our farm share boxes.  And then, we wait, for you to participate in the making of your box on Friday and Saturday via your swaps!

After our Saturday rest, Sunday morning at 6am we begin our harvest.  It takes us three days to bring in your parsley, zucchini, beets, collards, carrots and so much more!

A more honest perspective is that you share of our farm's harvest began back in February, when we started planting seeds in our greenhouse for spring transplanting, so there's really months involved in the life of the food you're eating each week this summer!

It's a pretty big operation to coordinate and, throw in the wild card of weather, it's quite a feat that we pull of each week, planting, cultivating, harvesting, irrigating, packing, and distributing the food we grow.  And then repeat for the next week.  Summer moves fast around here, indeed!  And we're grateful that you share each week with us in the life of your CSA farm share!

Happy Eating,

Patty and the Featherstone Crew
