What's Happening - May 25th & 27th

Posted on May 19th, 2021 by Ashley Robertson

Greetings Farm Fans -

Our farmers are bracing for the mid-late May freeze that terrifies agricultural producers throughout west central Nevada!  Temperatures tonight are expected to drop down to the Danger Zone so row covers are being shaken out and stretched over the planted fields.  The news from Lattin Farms is that the asparagus has stopped growing and is likely done for the season.  Meanwhile, Fisk Farms has started harvesting produce that will appear in your boxes this week including LOVAGE!  Lovage is a perennial plant that can tolerate our Nevada winters and yields an herbaceous leafy stem that tastes like a marriage between parsley and celery.  We have limited amounts of lovage available from the Desert Farming Initiative and Fisk Farms--I challenge you to give it a try!

Also this week, we are running a special on Duck Eggs from Four Duck Farms.  They are available as an add-on to your share at the low-low price of $4.00 for a 6-ct package.  Duck eggs tastes similarly to chicken eggs--however they are between 50-100% larger than their chicken cousins.  The yolk of a duck egg tends to be much more of a deep, vibrant yellow and can taste much richer than that of a chicken.  Here is a quick link to How to Cook Duck Eggs. I truly hope that at least one of our subscribers buys a pack of duck eggs in order to make some spectacular Deviled Eggs!

We continue to purchase a limited amount of produce from central California farms in order to supplement the Nevada-Grown produce.  We will identify what is coming from California if you prefer to choose to stick to Nevada.  It should only be another week or two before our Nevada produce has caught up to our western neighbors.

Also, I neglected to mention this last week - but for our new subscribers, we ask that you bring a reusable shopping bag (or two) with you to pick up your share.  We reuse our NevadaGrown boxes and will collect them each week as we make our deliveries.  Additionally, please do not take the floral bouquets if you have NOT subscribed to a flower share!  We had a bouquet go missing this week!  I know they are beautiful, shares are still available, and I want you to take a bouquet home but not at the cost of one of the people who has subscribed!

Please let me know if you have any questions,

and Thank You for your support of our local producers!
