Farm Happenings for May 17, 2023

Posted on May 16th, 2023 by Marnie Chown

Welcome to the 2023 CSA season!

We are super excited that you are here!!

Before you get to customizing your very first share, we need you to know a few things! Please read the message below and reach out to me (Marnie) if you need help of any kind.

I explain what items are available this week from us and the additional products we have as swaps from other local farms.

The items available this week

The longer we farm, the more we notice that the spring weather is increasingly unpredictable. Because of this, some crops are super quick to reach maturity and others can be slow. We do our best to mitigate the risks with frost cloth, hoophouses, greenhouses and timing our seeding schedule so that we are not creating a bottleneck in our nursery...but we can only do so much. So we prepare ourselves for inevitable spring unpredictability. It's all part of farming!

This season we have cucumbers before we though we would! We have garlic scallions which we have never grown before! We have rhubarb that is thriving and basil from pots in the greenhouse.

Also this season our spinach, arugula and stir fry mix are behind schedule by about 1 week. Our romaine lettuce is also behind schedule but we should have lots in 2 weeks.

Please understand that we have lots of veggies coming but the selection is limited this week.

We have lots available for you to add into your share:

Seedlings

As past members might remember, the first few weeks of our CSA program always includes seedlings for your home garden...and that is true for this year as well!

We don't have the volume we have had in the past, but there are some nice tomatoes, lettuce, kale this week and more to come next week.

Seedlings can be swapped into your share.

We also have herb seedlings available from Sarah!

Sarah is the woman behind Barking Root Botanicals. She grows her herbs here at our farm! She leases an entire field block of garden space and a few tables in the nursery every season to get her plants going.

Her seedlings are both culinary herbs and medicinal herbs. Read the descriptions to learn about them!

Sarah makes teas, tea blends and garlic powder too! Some of her products will be available as swaps and extras.

Asparagus

We are lucky to have family members that farm as well! Charlie and Christine Forman at Forman Farms are my (Marnie) aunt and uncle who farm in Seeley's Bay. They have a market garden operation, some tomato greenhouses and cash cropping land.

We have asparagus from them this week!

They are NOT certified organic, the asparagus is available as a swap if you'd like some.

(FYI we planted asparagus this year...it'll be ready in 3 years lol!)

Tulips

We tried some tulips for the first time this season and we are happy to report that we have about 20 bunches available. Get them this week only!

So, to finish up, there are many items to choose from but you will actively have to add them into your share if you want them.

If nothing is appealing to you this week, we will have many more veggies in the weeks to come so you are welcome to reschedule your first share if you'd like.

If you find that you would like some items but it doesn't amount to the $25 share value, the difference is not automatically credited to your account, so email me and I can adjust it manually!

That's all for now! Enjoy your veggies this week!
