COVID-19 and Small Businesses

Posted on March 13th, 2020 by Andrew Eatwell Farm

It’s pretty hard to start this without bringing up our current situation with this new virus. I think now is exactly when we all need to be eating fresh, organic veg and fruits. I am guessing many of you are trying to avoid crowded super markets, and it seems like people are finding a new interest in a CSA box. To afford a little extra protection we will probably use box liners in the boxes next week. We do re-use our boxes, and I have always been sensitive to everyone’s desire to keep plastic to an absolute minimum, but I think we would all agree, that perhaps given the current crisis, now is a good time to initiate that practice. Please know, I am not happy to add more plastic to our CSA process, but I think now is the time.

Many of our friends that have small businesses in the Bay Area are really struggling because a big chunk of their business is large bulk corporate orders, and with offices closed, orders are on hold. For us, one our biggest wholesale accounts is also on hold for the same reason, they primarily service Google, AirBnB, FB and the like. The Farmer’s Market is also quiet, so we are most certainly feeling the hit. With over $10,000 worth of plants recently going into the ground, it is a critical time for us to not fall too far behind financially. Especially with summer vacations quickly approaching.

This is going to challenging for all of us and we all need to pull together. So I would like to remind you all, if you know someone who is in need of a CSA box but can’t afford it due to illness, please let them know about the Care Shares. We have shares available and people do still donate to the fund. All you have to do is as them if they could use a 4 box subscription and make sure the box can be picked up somehow. Then just connect us and we can take it from there. Food is growing on the farm, and I would hate to think there are people out there with compromised health and don’t have access to fresh fruit and veg. Together we can help.

Keep clean and healthy y’all. Thank you for being a part of our family!
