Farm Happenings for August 1, 2023

Posted on July 28th, 2023 by Alex Smith

Howdy everyone,

This week has been busy with the standard July fare:  knocking back weeds, irrigating, and harvesting. Irrigating in particular takes up a lot of my focus when its hot and sunny like it has been. We meet our irrigation needs here on the farm with the big pond out front of the yurts. The pond is filled with rain water, but we also have a well dug specifically to keep it full. We have a large pump that moves the water out to all of the veggies fields. Depending on the crop we either have lines of "drip tape" precisely placed at the crop roots, or we run sprinklers that cover the whole field. When we run the drip tape we can also incorporate liquid fertilizers and amendments that go directly to the plants. Managing soil moisture and fertility is one of the most important ways of ensuring healthy plants. Healthy plants are not only more productive, but also make healthier food. And healthy food is what we are all about!

Enjoy the food!
