Farm Happenings for June 6, 2023

Posted on June 2nd, 2023 by Alex Smith

Hello and Welcome to CSA Week 3!

I'm pleased to report that the produce has loved the sunshine of the past week and our fresh offerings continue to expand. Our crew is remains enthusiastic and energetic despite the unseasonable heat. Our featured photo this week is student farmer Josh toting straw to mulch pathways.

As a farmer, I'm constantly monitoring the farm ecosystem. Each year I tend to notice particular species thriving in the specific conditions of the season. Among others, I have noticed a lot of lady bugs this year. I tend to think they are generally good luck; but their larva are voracious consumers of pest insect eggs on our plants - they are great to have around a veggie farm. Perhaps an omen of a prosperous growing season!

Finally, I wanted to shout out some of my favorite vegetables featured in this weeks CSA share, the kale and collard greens. I fry up a bunch of one of the two of those greens every morning for our family breakfast. Oil, salt and pepper. A delicious and nutritious start to the day. The collard greens take a little longer than the kale, it helps to add a little liquid so they wilt.

As always I hope yall enjoy!

Best,

Alex
