Farm Happenings-May 31th 2022

Posted on May 27th, 2022 by Will Nelson

Welcome to the wonderful world of livestock!

A usual day in livestock starts with a meeting with the farm crew for a quick overview of the day and group stretch. After that I’m headed off onto chores.

My first stop… Chickens! This flock of 60 has been known to keep me on the run. These brave ladies love to test their fence as well as fly over top of it! However, I’d like to announce that after much trial and error (as well as electricity and wing clipping) our happy hens have stayed nicely within their designated home.

Next up we have our fluffy pastured sheep. Our ewes have been busy settling into motherhood and our lambs have been busy settling into their new world. You’ll find the herd early in the morning all huddled up together fast asleep. When they’re awake these animals put on quite the show. Their theatrical hops and skips and occasional rough housing would put a smile on anyone’s face.

Lastly, we have the largest life on the farm, the cattle. Our growing herd is made up of of a mix of black angus and angus- Hereford crosses. My favorite time of day is getting to move the cows into a new pasture and watching them all run with excitement.

All of our animals at Dickinson College Farm help support the mission of sustainability as well as provide delicious pasture raised meat and eggs to our community. All of our meat is Animal Welfare Certified and Organic. If you’re interested in trying our products the meat and eggs are available for CSA as add ons.

Thank you so much for supporting this amazing work and the Farm.

Have a great day!
