Farm Happenings for May 22, 2020

Posted on May 14th, 2020 by Will Nelson
CSA pickup details for next Tuesday are listed below. But first, some updates from our fields and pastures....

Spring is booming at Dickinson College Farm. Our days are packed full of putting plants in the ground, weeding, and putting more plants in the ground. We are excited for the CSA to start and to begin harvesting for you again! We welcomed our first volunteer crew at the farm on Wednesday. With over 10 people on the crew, we were able to weed all our garlic, finished weeding the asparagus patch, weeded the strawberries, and even get some hoeing done. Next week we are scheduled to put our first heat-loving crops in the ground: tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers, and squash. Summer is almost here!

The farm also welcomed another calf this week, despite a complicated labor, making a total of two new cows for the season with more on the way. They both seem happy playing in the pastures and staying close to their mothers. The sheep have all given birth and we have a total of 25 lambs on the farm. They can usually be found jumping around with the other lambs, bugging their moms for milk, or sleeping in the cool grass. Life is good as an animal on Dickinson College Farm.

We are looking forward to sharing with you the abundance of spring and summer crops to come.

CARLISLE PICKUP AT FACILITIES MANAGEMENT:

If you are signed up for the curbside pickup in Carlisle on Tuesday, please follow the directions listed below to navigate your way to our CSA location at Dickinson College's Facilities Management. The map provides a visual for where we will be located.

From North Orange Street, turn into the Dickinson College Facilities Management, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB), and Project SHARE parking lot. Proceed straight toward the far end of the parking lot where Project SHARE is located. Continue past the entrance to Project SHARE and slowly drive around the back of the building (this is a one way alley). Look for signage to guide your way!

Proceed past the back of Project SHARE and CPYB, heading back toward Orange Street. You will see a BIG SIGN notifying you of the CSA Curbside Pickup Location. Please stop here and a farm staff member will greet you and deliver your CSA share.

If you have any problems or get turned around, please call Jenn Halpin at 717-713-0275 and she will guide you in.
