Tuesday CSA: Dickinson College Farm Field Notes for Week of June 10th

Posted on June 7th, 2019 by Jenn Halpin
The official start of summer may be two weeks away, but don't tell the leafy greens here at Dickinson Farm that - they are stretching their big leafy hands straight up into the sunshine these days and giving the asparagus a run for its money. This week we moved much of our harvesting out of the greenhouses and into the fields where we are gathered kale, rainbow chard, spinach, lettuce, and the first bulbs of fennel and kohlrabi of the season. The team also harvested garlic scapes (yum!) and strawberries this week. In preparation for the dog days of summer ahead, we also began filling up some new vegetable beds with celeriac, celery, sweet potato, leek, tomato and lettuce seedlings.

Our farm lost a few roosters this week, making our mornings noticeably quieter around the farm. However, what was lost of the avian species was gained via the bovine family, and a new baby calf arrived on Tuesday morning! Aptly named "Brown Cow" by a fellow apprentice, he has a sweet temperament and mocha brown fur. He's just our second calf this year, but will have plenty of company soon enough with many more calves due to be born in the coming weeks.

From everyone here on the farm (cows included), we hope you enjoy this week's CSA share! And as always, please feel free to reach out to us anytime with questions, comments, or suggestions.
