Update from Bahner Farm

It's winter on the farm! For us at Bahner Farm, that means lots of greens. Although we still have lots of carrots, beets, cabbage and more in the cooler, we focus on greens production in the winter. For now we still have lots of fresh baby greens coming out of our unheated high tunnels. Hard as it may be to believe, many of our hardiest varieties will continue to grow through these frigid short winter days with a little care. Our biggest tunnels do best, since they warm up the most and have more thermal mass to hold some heat through the night. In addition, we cover our greens daily with two layers of winter-grade row cover. We spend about 40 minutes to an hour each day just covering and uncovering to help them get light during the daylight hours and remove dampness from the leaves. At some point, even these efforts won't be enough and there will be a gap in production while we wait for daylight to increase and starting the growing process again. In the meantime, we'll have lots of microgreens and peashoots to bring you the taste of spring, all winter long. Enjoy!
