Farm Happenings 4/5/2021: Spring brings a few new products! / Update from Bahner Farm

Posted on March 30th, 2021 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

Thank you all who auto-renewed for our Main Season! If you had auto-renew turned off or just recently signed up for Winter Shares you can still place your order for Main Season Farm Boxes here.

This week we have a few new product offerings, cáscara tea from 44 North Coffee, tofu from Heiwa Tofu, and a variety of miso flavors from Go-en Miso!

We're offering 15% off Thirty Acre Farm Earth Fire, Melon Head and Red Riot Hot Sauces this week - just in time for spring grilling! Also, 15% off Maine Grains Rye and Pastry Flour and Ancient Grain Cereal.

What is Cáscara tea you might wonder? Cáscara is a lesser known consumable bi-product of coffee production. Cáscara, meaning ‘skin’ or ‘husk’ in Spanish, is the outer peel of the coffee cherry. The outer fruit of the coffee bean is removed, sun-dried and brewed as a loose leaf coffee cherry tea. With a little bit of caffeine imparted from the removed coffee bean, cáscara tea has intense tasting notes of earthy rose hips, tamarind, and sweet hibiscus. It is also loaded with vitamins, natural sugars, and antioxidants. Delicious as a hot tea or an iced tea (or even as a concentrate for cocktails) Cáscara is a great addition to your tea assortment offerings.

Single Serving Brew Instructions:

HOT – Heat water to 200º F, place 3 T (18g) of Cascara in 10oz (300ml) heated water, steep 4 min. and enjoy.

COLD – Place 6 T (36g) of Cascara in 12oz (375ml) cold water, steep for 12-16 hours, strain, and enjoy.

Update from Bahner Farm

Though we stay pretty steadily busy all winter, in the last month things have really ramped up. Our greenhouse is full to bursting with thousands and thousands and thousands of little baby plants, destined either for our fields or for your gardens! Selling flower, herb, and vegetable seedlings has become a big part of our business in the last five years, and spring in the greenhouse is a whirlwind. Outside, the snow is melting and signs of spring are slowly appearing. We were lucky enough to have three great employees stay with us year round this year, and we're looking forward to the return of five more over the next six weeks as the farm launches into the new growing season. We have so much planned for Daybreak this year, and we're really excited for the year ahead.
