Farm Happenings for 6/2/2020 - Reminders for the New Season, Update from Bahner Farm

Posted on May 27th, 2020 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

We welcome summer with our main season shares this week! We hope you enjoy the work of our amazing farmers.

Reminders for the new season!

  • All our reusable plastic totes are sanitized ahead of each delivery and our driver is meticulous with wearing clean gloves when unloading at each site to minimize risk.
  • Please remember to bring a bag to transfer your share in to if your share arrives in one of our totes.
  • Any cardboard boxes we deliver are new—please take these home with you as we unfortunately cannot accept them back for recycling and our site hosts cannot dispose of them.
  • Please give other shareholders 6-10ft of space if you arrive at the pick-up location at the same time.
  • If you are sick, please do not come to pick up your food, have a friend or relative pick it up for you.
  • Gloves or hand sanitizer is great! If you are able to sanitize your hands or put gloves on ahead of picking up your shares it will help minimize risk for your fellow shareholders and yourself.
  • Please reach out to us if you have any concerns or suggestions on how we could improve the safety of your pick up sight.
  • Not crazy about something in your box? Go to My Preferences in your account profile and use the product rating system, there are five ratings you can give a product from “Love it” to “Not for me”, this will help customize your share box. And don’t forget you can swap items in your box, look for the “Time to customize your share” e-mail that arrives by Wednesday and click on the Swap Items button.
  • A reminder about share pick up – please arrive at the pick-up site during your designated times, we do not have arrangements with sites to hold shares – any share not picked up is forfeited by the member. If you know you're going to be out of town you can place your share on hold before Friday at 1pm. If an unexpected circumstance arises please contact us before your delivery day and we'll do our best to make other arrangements.
  • Note about swaps: When you are in the Swap items window and using the drop-down menu for an item, always swap for another item DO NOT use the Remove Item option.
  • Substitutions: Occasionally, due to crop fluctuations, at the last minute we might have to swap an item in your share - our farms do their best to let us know what will be harvested the following week but sometimes mother nature doesn't have the same plans!
  • Meat is packed in a separate cooler (also with your name on it!) so don't forget to grab it!
  • Putting shares on hold - if you experience difficulty putting any of your shares on hold please email farmers@daybreakgrowersalliance.com and we will assist you.

Enjoy the season!

Update from Bahner Farm

This spring has been incredibly busy! Our farmstand has been twice as busy as usual and we have been scrambling to keep the good veggies coming and the farmstand nicely stocked for all our customers. If you've never stopped in, come check us out - we're open daily from 10:00-6:00, May - October. In addition to our own organic produce, we have thousands of certified organic seedlings for your garden - and they are flying off the shelves this year!

Our hoophouses have been renovated over from their winter greens to their summer crops of tomatoes, cucumbers, and basil. I just can't WAIT to taste that first ripe tomato, or eat my first cucumber sandwich of the summer. Our fields have been planted with many of our spring crops already, with LOTS of planting yet to come in the next month.

We have a great crew on the farm this year, and we're really grateful for that. Our kids, who are of course at home and underfoot now all the time, pitch in from time to time - its fun seeing them become more and more capable at helping out on the farm as they get older.

This week in the Eat Your Greens Shares you're getting one of my favorite crops - our tender, delicious asparagus. What a treat! Enjoy!
