Farm Happenings for July 4, 2018

Good afternoon,

The "farm happenings" feature here is where I'll be giving you a weekly update on what's happening on the farm as well as some pointers on what to do with your veggies, especially when I've included something a bit unusual. Since I just sent another farm update to you, I don't have as much extra to tell you today.

In your veggie box, there are a few items that you may not be used to seeing:

- Welsh green onion is a type of perennial green onion where we just harvest the green tops rather than dig up the bulb. You'll find these a bit less tender than our regular green onions but the firmness of these green onions makes them a great addition to stir-fry's and are very popular in Asian cuisines

- Garlic scapes are the flowering top of the garlic plant. We pick them off to help make our garlic bulbs size up better, and they have an excellently strong garlic flavour. My favourite way to cook these is to drizzle them with a bit of olive oil and salt and rill them for a few minutes on the BBQ

- Sorrel is somewhat like being halfway between a green and an herb. It has a sharp tangy flavour that goes great in salads, and if you have and basil on hand a basil/sorrel pesto is really tasty!

- My regular green onions that I'm harvesting right now are from seed that I planted late last fall so they got an extra early start this spring. I had hoped they'd stay thin into July, but they have already started forming some pretty thick little onion bulbs so the green onions you get in the share for the next couple of weeks can almost be treated just like regular onion.

- You'll be seeing honey as an option if you'd like a jar instead of one of your veggies at any time. The honey isn't from my farm, but from a couple in Lacombe that makes some great honey.
