June Farm Update

Posted on June 6th, 2018 by Daniel Chappell

It's been a little while since I sent an update to everyone to let you know how the season is progressing! It sure has been a busy month, with a record late start to the season followed by one of the hottest and driest May's I've seen since I started farming. I'm pretty happy overall with how everything's been going though. Seeds are germinating well, perennials are growing strong and the greenhouse veggies are growing great!

Germinating Beans

All the deep planted seeds, like beans, peas and squash have greminated really well and are already putting on some great growth, but with out enough rain there have been some delays on shallow seeded crops like carrots and dill.

Rain Guage

I'm always keeping a real close eye on the rain guage in our semi-arid climate. So far there has been about 30mm of rain this spring, which is enough to keep established plants happy enough in good soil but seeds can sometimes have trouble germinating/surviving when we have lots of hot dry weather for weeks between rain events.

Early greenhouse zucchini. There probably won't be enough for everyone at the first delivery but at least a few of these will make it into the first CSA delivery in July

I always get pretty excited to get the growing season started and this year has been no exception. It's great to see green growth and get my hands in the soil after a long winter!

Garlic is coming along despite the late spring

There are still a few shares left for the upcoming season if you haven't had a chance to sign up yet. All of the pickup locations are still available, but the Red Deer Wednesday location is filling up fast! You can sign up here if you'd like to get in on the summer veggie share!
