Farm Happenings for August 6, 2020

Posted on August 2nd, 2020 by Chris DeVries

We are seriously into our big summer harvests now.  This week we have plentiful cherry tomatoes so we are putting them in the CSA shares at a reduced rate ($5) and we have the very first of our melons!  A note about melons they year:  They are in very short supply because of some serious difficulties with late May transplanting so for the next few weeks there will be only a few dozen per week.  We expect to get a big load of them by September though.  If you choose a melon this week, please note it could be a watermelon or a honey gold melon which is like an orange honeydew melon.

We are also starting to get a lot more big tomatoes from our hoophouses and even a few from outside.  We are going to continue trying to pack them under-ripe in your shares to make sure they don't get crushed easily, but I think you will find the quality and flavour overall is going to be a big improvement from our June tomatoes.  I believe we have been struggling to get the ripeness and fertility in our greenhouse tomatoes right this year, but they are also improving a lot since the earliest harvests.
