Exciting new offerings for your taste buds!

Posted on May 29th, 2019 by Lisa Merva

Hello Friends!

I apologize that this email is arriving to you later than usual-- I have been experiencing technical difficulties today. I will extend your customization window until 1:30 PM on Thursday to make up for it.

We are now entering the second half of our Spring into Summer CSA. The first half was decidedly springy, with plenty of roots and greens to choose from... and now we get to begin to enjoy our summer favorites. It takes courage to embrace seasonal eating as you have, and I sincerely hope it's been an exciting experience to bring home a basket of local goodies every week. It's so much fun to build a meal around freshly harvested, vibrant produce, isn't it?

Have you tried something new? Let us know! We love to hear "CSA Success Stories" about people learning to love a fresh, new flavor.

For those of you with an Independent Baking Co. Bread Share, this week's loaf is:

Country French

Mixed grain bread of the French countryside with stone ground wholegrain wheat, spelt, and rye flours. Made with heirloom whole wheat flour.

This week I'm very pleased to announce a few new offerings...

Luna Baking Co. is located right here in Athens and you may have been enjoying their breads for years without even knowing it-- they provide freshly baked goodies for dozens of restaurants around town. Now you can add a loaf to your Collective Harvest order! My family's all-time favorite sandwich bread is the Luna Sourdough Loaf. We also adore the Pita Bread (so soft and fluffy!) and the Spent Grain Bread, which is mildly sweet and deliciously hearty. You can't go wrong with any of Luna's goods, though... Give them all a try!

If ferments are your things, you will be very happy to know that we are partnering with Cultured Traditions to bring you all sorts of delicious fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi. You are probably familiar with those, but have you heard of Jun? It's similar to kombucha, but made with green tea and honey rather than black tea and cane sugar. For more information, check out the Vendor Product page on our website or Cultured Traditions website. Their kitchen is located in Suwanee and owned by Tanya Batskikh. Tanya will be joining us at a few of our CSA pickups, but in the meantime I asked her if she would introduce herself to the Collective Harvest community. Here she is (on the right)!

"My name is Tatiana Batskikh, though most call me Tanya which is a short form of my name. I am the owner of Cultured Traditions - a small batch fermentation shop.

I was born and raised in Russia, in the Ural mountains very near the place where movie Doctor Zhivago was filmed. I always get asked how I ended up in Georgia... I came to the United States a few times as an exchange student when I was still in college. Then I met someone special from Georgia and that changed my life. And now many years later I am still here, I live in Cumming, GA with my husband Charles and we have three amazing children - my older daughter Janet, 4.5 and twins Charli and Max, who will be turning 2 in September.

Cultured Traditions was born out of love and passion for naturally fermented foods that were- and still are- a way of life if Russia - this is how families preserve their crops for long cold winter months. I started out with our traditional Russian style ferments - Russian Style Sauerkraut, Beet Kvass, Pickles, all those things that I missed so much and couldn't imagine my life without. However I love to experiment, so along the way we have added many other interesting things to our product line, and every few weeks something new inevitably gets produced in our kitchen.

We use centuries old fermentation methods to make our delicious products. Not only are they tasty, they are incredibly good for you! We never pasteurize anything, so all our ferments are raw, living and full of happy 'bugs'. For all of our products we use certified organic ingredients, but we do also work with local farmers who practice organic growing methods without being formally certified. I hope you try our products and enjoy them as much as we do!"

This is shaping up to be a very tasty CSA season!... Let's gather 'round the table and eat!

In gratitude,

Lisa
