Farm Happening for Deliveries July 19th & 20th

Posted on July 16th, 2019 by Jodi Danyo

New this Week:  Perpetual Spinach, Mini Green & Red Cabbages (in limited supply), Red Scallions, and TOMATOES!

Perpetual spinach is one of those unusual crops that perhaps you haven't heard about before?  Since it is difficult to grow regular spinach and other cold season greens like kale during the hot summer months, perpetual spinach is an excellent substitute for traditional spinach.  Although perpetual spinach is part of the same plant family as beets and chard, perpetual spinach has flavor more similar to traditional spinach with flatter leaves and thin stems.  We hope you will enjoy some this week!

This Past Week on Our Farm...

It was hot, hot, hot!  Wednesday exceeded 90 degrees on the farm, which makes work challenging since at those temperatures, we need to take good care of both plants and humans (and dogs).  We did get two inches of rain on Thursday so all the plants are in good shape!

July is a transition month for crops, and so we said goodbye to most of our Brassica family crops this week...we'll see the kales, broccoli, and cabbage again this fall (or at least that is the plan).  We'll have a very limited harvest of spring-planted cabbage, but we'll be sprinkling some of them into the deliveries this week.  We hope to have more this fall.

And, as of today, our field tomatoes are starting to ripen so we will be adding them in small quantities to the shares at the end of this week!  We are so excited!  Yay!

Have a great week ahead everyone!
