Fruits, Roots and Shoots

Posted on August 27th, 2022 by Danielle Boerson

The melon harvest began last week and it looks like we will be rounding out the month with a nice supply of cantaloupe and watermelon.  The cantaloupe are pure ambrosia, with a firm texture that melts in your mouth.  Peppers are going gang busters in the high tunnels, with plants that are producing an abundance of firm, shiny, brightly colored fruits.  It won't last forever of course, but for the moment, we are replete with lovely sweet peppers.  As for those tomatoes, they are every bit juicy and delicious.  From the orange cherries to the red slicers and beyond to the unusual, this year's tomato harvest is feeding us all quite well.

We are also digging heartily into our no-till potatoes.  The size and quality of the tubers is excellent, and we are seeing good results as we move from the red potatoes onto the gold.  If you are wondering what you can expect going forward for potatoes, our m.o. is to harvest them one variety at a time until we make it to the frost.  At that point we will dig up any that are left.  But in the meantime, you can expect more Oneida Gold, a small run of the famous Peter Wilcox (lavender skin and deep yellow flesh), Adirondack Blue, and finally, Goldrush russet. One potato, two potato, three potato, four.  Try some this week and you will surely want more!

Thankfully, we have an amazing crew that continues to work hard to plant, tend, harvest and distribute all of these awesome fruits and veggies.  Our recent trip to the Door County Peninsula gave them a chance to run the show in our absence, and they nailed it.  Some crew members went above and beyond and even did some field work, like cleaning up the kale section (featured in this weeks picture). We are so grateful to have good help that is invested in the farm.  We couldn't do this without our crew!

And we couldn't do it without You!  Thank you for choosing local and organic.  We'll keep growing:-)
