Making the Most of Your CSA share

Posted on June 26th, 2021 by Danielle Boerson

With the first 2 weeks of the CSA season already behind us, we are now poised to cruise into the growing season at full throttle.  We hope that you are enjoying your share so far!  To think, this is only the beginning and there is much more in store!  As we eat our way through the weeks of summer, I encourage you to make the most of your CSA share by using some of the customization features that Harvie offers.  A few members have asked me what to do about missing a delivery week.  If you are going to be traveling or otherwise unable to pick up your share on your scheduled delivery week, you can log into your account and choose from a few simple options that will enable you to either skip, reschedule or place a hold on your share.  Check out this link for more detailed directions:

As far as the contents of your share are concerned, I have a confession to make...I thought for sure, without a doubt, that our sugar snap peas would be ready to pick by the time you get your next delivery.  I did some test picking this afternoon however, and was disappointed to see that the pods are still several days from plumping up to their ideal, sweet size.  To ensure that we will have the volume we need to offer snap peas to all of our members, I will have to wait just a wee bit longer.  If we determine  that there are in fact enough ripe peas to harvest before the customization period ends on Tuesday morning, I will add the peas in for extras or swapping.  We will just have to wait and see.  I do know that once they start, we will have a nice supply for the next few weeks.  There are literally a kazillion blossoms on the vines (which are among the tallest I've seen to date), so please be patient as we wait for nature to do her thing.  In the meantime, there are other exciting additions this week, including crisp, sweet celery, and tender, nutty zucchini.  A few of the other on-deck crops worth mentioning are green cabbage (summer slaw, here we come!), sweet onions, and cherry tomatoes.  Did I say the T word?  Yes, I did indeed.  The cherry tomatoes are starting to blush red and it won't be long before they too appear in your shares.

Anyway you slice it, we are so happy to have you on board as members of the farm this season, and we hope that you have a positive experience, both with the food and with Harvie.  As you can see in the picture above, this member is happy to embrace her vegetables after picking them up at the farm.  She assured me that she would have no problem eating them all herself before the next week's delivery.  I don't doubt her abilities for a second!  It turns out those carrots are dangerously addictive.  I'm not even sure if Paulette made it home with any left!!
