Hello Members-

This past weekend we got to get off the farm to go camping and the crew took care of the hoophouses, greenhouse, animals and irrigation while we were gone.  The kids got to fish for the first time, we went hiking and we spend a lot of time cooking over a fire.  Feels good to be home and start fresh.

On the farm, the cantaloupes are ripening, but not quite ready yet.  The sweet corn is ready for the 3rd week (1 or 2 weeks to go), the peppers are starting to turn colors and the winter squash is sweetening up. This is the last week for summer squash and cucumbers.  We are working on harvesting onions to cure in the greenhouse, and the red ones you get this week will be from that harvest.  Fall crops are coming along and you will soon see radishes and greens in the box.  But the tomatoes are peaking now!

The baby chicks are doing great and the broilers are growing each day.  If you are interested in trying a chicken, whole frozen, you can add to your CSA box.  Otherwise, we have larger chicken shares we can deliver to,  Check it out HERE

We still have room in our Fall Share for about 20 more shares.  Want to add 2 or 4 more shares to your season?  SIGN UP HERE!

Here is what might be in your share this week (Will update with recipes and descriptions on Wednesday):

Purple Lacinato (DINO) Kale- a bit on the holey side due to an excessive amount of grasshoppers descending on the farm for the 2nd year in a row.  We do not know what to do about them!  But they make almost every crop holey.

Massaged Kale Salad

Tomatoes, a lot- We are at the peak of tomato season and we couldn't even harvest all of them there were so many!  You will get a nice mix of red slicers and heirlooms. Store on the counter, not in the fridge.

Tomato, White Bean and Kale Soup

Tomato and Corn Pie

Watermelon- These should all be ripe at this point, which means you should keep them in the fridge and they will keep for weeks, but of course, you probably want to eat it before that!  We grow a red variety and a yellow variety.  You will get either one.

Sweet Corn (8-10 ears)-take kernels off cob and freeze, make a scalloped corn dish, roast, grill or boil.

Corn Bread with fresh corn

Red Onions- These can be kept on the counter or in dark place.  They are more or less cured just by being done growing and flagging themselves in the field.  Great for a sandwich or salad.

Corn, Red Onion and Tomato Salad

Yukon Gold Potatoes- These are very creamy and are now pretty much cured so you can keep them in a cool, dark place or in the frige, too.  Wash again, although we do wash them once here.  Freshly harvested is the best!

Roasted Potatoes with Sage and Brown Butter

Broccoli or Cauliflower- We have a little more cauliflower coming in now, but it has had a tough time this year.  Some people will get cauliflower and some broccoli.  We don't have a way of keeping track so we keep it random and hope everyone gets cauliflower at least once.

Roasted Cauliflower Salad with Lemon Tahini dressing

Broccoli Salad with Creamy vegan dressing

Sage (great with potatoes!)-You can hang this bunch upside down to dry it. When it is dry it will crumble into soft little bits that you can store in a glass jar for years.  It will keep for a couple weeks if the end of in a jar of water and its in the fridge.

Linguine with Sage and Chicken

Green Bean/Dragons Tongue Snap Beans Mix- These dragons tongue beans are fun to eat! They also loose their coloring after they are cooked, so we like to eat them raw.  But they can be used the same way you sear, cook, steam, or saute the green beans.

Cucumber, Green Bean and Tomato Salad

Cucumbers- Last week for cucumbers!

Summer Squash/Zucchini- Last week for summer squash and zucchini!

Cherry Tomatoes- We keep harvesting more and more each week, so expect these for the next few weeks easily.  Do not refrigerate.

Tomatillos- These keep well in the fridge in a plastic bag.  You can roast and add them to a salsa, freeze them raw or roasted in a freezer bag. Sorry we do not have cilantro yet for these.  We will be giving them again when the cilantro is big enough!

Tomatillo Chicken Stew

Charred Tomatillo Salad

Hot Peppers (3)- Goes well with any salsa you are making with the onions, tomatoes, tomatillos and corn.

Eggplant

Heirloom Tomatoes!

Beach time fun!

Kristy from Beez Kneez hauling a great big load of honey back to her Bee Farm!

Next week you might see in the box:

Tomatoes

corn

cantaloupe?

radishes?

carrots

onions, yellow

broccoli/cauliflower

peppers

cherry tomatoes

beans

Have a great week!
