Hello Members!

I hope you had a nice holiday weekend.  It's been a hot one, still!, but it looks like a nice dose of rain tomorrow which we are so super excited about on here on the farm!  The cooler weather that will ensue will also be a welcome respite for the crops especially.

We wanted to tell you about an event that is happening THIS WEEKEND, July 10 from 10-4 at various farm across Minnesota and Western WI.  We are one of them and will have our farm open for self-guided tours, a brat grill and our farmstand will be open with various vegetables and meats available for purchase.  You can walk around and see our animals, vegetables and meet us!

Find out the detail HERE

We hope to see you here!  There are a few other farms within miles of our farm so it is a great place to spend an afternoon visiting local family farms!

A few reminders:

We have add-on meat for sale that you can add to your box!  Brats and chops are going like hotcakes these days!  Check out our extras when you go in to customize and look at what is going in to your box this week!  Please let me know if you are having any trouble with this.

We also have chicken back in stock! you can order right into your CSA box OR you can sign up for 5 or so chickens for delivery separately

.

Please RETURN your boxes to your dropsite sooner rather than later!  We are running a bit short and some people are getting larger white 1 1/9th boxes. Break them down and leave them where you pick up your CSA boxes.

Also you can CUSTOMIZE Your box by swapping and adding items.  You will find it in your customization email that you get with this newsletter.

Without further ado, here are the items you may get in your box this week: (I will update with recipes and crop information by wednesday)

Beet Bunch- Beets have a very earthy taste, which some people like and some people don't.  But you can steam or roast them, chill them and then put them in a salad with dressing and goat or feta and they are really good!

Beet pesto pizza with kale and goat cheese

butter head lettuce/romaine lettuce (2 heads)- We are a little short on butterhead this week so there will be some people who only get romaine.  We will make it a big head! Make sure to wash this first and keep in a plastic bag in the fridge.

Tokyo Bekana bunch (Great for "lettuce wraps") soft and buttery Asian Green- This green is something like an Asian Cabbage but lighter.

Sesame Ginger Tokyo Bekana

Tokyo Bekana Spring Rolls

Another spring roll recipe

Kohlrabi-2 These are getting quite large out in the field.  Peel them first and slice, julienne or dice into salad onto a sandwich, salad or marinate .  We find these a great snack tp have on hand or to dip into hummus.

Roasted Vegetable and Kohlrabi Noodle Bowl

Kohlrabi Fritters

Scallions-  Great to add to any stire fry or saute, eggs or the fritters above. Keeps well in the fridge in a plastic bag.

savory bunch- A very fragrant herb that is great for lots of cooking.   You can also hang upside down and dry it and crush it with salt and use it as a rub for meats.

Creamy kohlrabi and potato soup

Salad Turnips- Salad turnips are a great addition to salads.  If the greens are not too yellow, you can wilt them into a stire fry, too!  Keep the turnips topped (without greens) and cleaned into a bag in the fridge.

Sweet Maple Salad Turnips

Garlic Scapes- We were a little short on the scapes so there were a handful of people who got a head of fresh garlic instead. Keeps well in the fridge in a bag.  Use as you would garlic in any dish.

Cucumbers- We have a lot of cucumbers out there!  Everyone will get a few.

Cucumber salad

Quick Pickles

Summer Squash and Zucchini- If you noticed last week you got a surprise summer squash in the box as we had to harvest them all of a sudden!  This week, you will get 2.

Squash Fritters

Zucchini Recipe

Large Kale bunch (mix of 3 kinds)- This is a new kind of mix we are growing that we cut and bunch.  It contains several varieties of purple kale and a little dino or lacinato in it.  We think it is a bit more tender as its younger, smaller and more delicate.  Keeps well in a plastic bag in the fridge.  Kale salad (that you can use other veggies in too!)

In the box next we are hoping for:

squash

cukes

carrots

parlsey

fresh ailsa craig onions

collards?

broccoli?

celery
