CSA box #3!

Posted on June 23rd, 2019 by Ayla Dodge

Welcome to box #3 already!

On the farm these days the crops are growing quickly and so are the weeds!  You can find us weeding, planting, harvesting, weeding, trellising tomatoes and cucumbers, irrigating and ... weeding! In your box this week you will find sweet orange carrots straight from the hoophouse! This is the soonest we have had carrots and we are happy our hoophouse trial worked!  Now we need to get them out of there in order to give the cucumbers some room to grow.

Here are a few things for you to remember about  the CSA and the boxes:

ALWAYS take the box with your name on it that is from BLACKBROOK FARM!  If someone is picking your box up for you, please tell them to take the box with your name on it from BLACKBROOK FARM!  This is very important.

Please return your box either the same week (bring a bag to empty your veggies into) or the following time you pick up your box.  Please collapse your box and neatly stack it or put it where the other boxes are.

If you are half share, your box is delivery every other week ( unless you have rearranged your schedule with Harvie).  Please remember to check if this is your week or not.  Full shares are delivery every week.  When your box is delivered on Thursday, a delivery email is sent out.  EVERY one at that dropsite gets that email, even if you do not get a box that week. So it is important for you to know which weeks you pick up.  Please email me with questions.

Important!!! We are moving our delivery NEXT WEEK to WEDNESDAY, JULY 3RD.
This is due to people being out to town and also there are several of our drop sites that are closed on this day.  This only happens every 7 or so years!

Please plan accordingly.  It is not too late to switch around your pick up days, but we hope most of you can get your share next week! Here is information on how to change your schedule

This week's CSA delivery is normal, delivered on Thursday, June 27th. Here is information on how to access when and where to pick up your box

We also have 100% pastured Pork extras for SALE!  If you order pork from us in your share we put it in a foil pack very frozen and deliver it to you in your box.  It will either be partially frozen or very very cold when you receive it.  We also have Pastured Pork Packages for sale that we home deliver to your door.  This is a great way to load up on all the cuts of a hog and get your good healthy fats!  You can find our sign up share for that on our website or our Harvie site under shares. Let us know if you have any questions!  Raising animals is a large part of what we do at Blackbrook Farm!

In the box this week we have:

Carrots- These are nice crisp and sweet orange carrots straight from the hoophouse.  Top these and store them in a container in the fridge to maintain freshness.  we like them raw, but cooking them is good, too. You can use the tops for carrot pesto. Carrot Top Pesto

Strawberries- freshest juiciest sweetest berries ever.  WOW!  My kids are on overload eating these right now.  They are picked RIPE so don't hold off eating, they will not keep long!

Swiss Chard-These are nice beautiful bunches of vitamin rich rainbow swiss chard.  We love these in eggs, anything stir fry or baked.  You can also chop thin and eat raw in a salad.  Keep best if in a plastic bag in the fridge. Creamed Swiss Chard

Radishes-These are a french breakfast variety.  They are a little faster to bolt, and they are spicy! But many people like french breakfast radishes on toasted, buttered and salted bread or cooked lightly with a meal.  They have a nice flavor.  Top them to store longer.

Salad mix-This is our new to Salanova mix.  We are loving the harvestability (official term) of this lettuce. We grow it in the greenhouse, transplant it and than harvest it by cutting its leave and it will regrow to cut again.  It is great because there are no weedsin the mix to pick through!!  And we like how it holds up to a dressing. Keeps for 2 weeks, too.  Let us know what you think!

Fresh Dill-We love herbs!  We try ( almost always succeed) to put an herb in every box.  Our dill this year looks great!  Put it in a dressing!Creamy dill dressing

kohlrabi-Not our highest producing crop of the year!  This week you get just a taste of what kohlrabi is!  Everyone ( who wanted it) got just 1 kohlrabi! It has been a really strange spring and some of our cole crops ( broccoli, cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower) have taken forever to grow!  To eat kohlrabi, PEEL IT!  and enjoy like an apple, sliced, grated, or chopped. Great made the box every week (onion, scallion, leek, garlic) So versatile!  Chop fresh in to salad, burritos, top a soup.  Or cook like an onion!

Spinach or Head lettuce-You will either get a bag of spinach or 1-2 heads of butterhead or Oscarde (red frills).  Keep in a plastic bag or pre-chop and bag to keep longer. We suggest always washing your lettuce, as we do wash it but it is hard to get all the dirt out when it is in head form.

On the pick list for next week:

Strawberries

Scallions

head lettuce/Salanova

cilantro

Dino or Curly Kale

Broccoli?

Summer Squash?

Carrots

Maybe more...

Also in the box this week are the mushroom share if you signed up for them.  Northwoods Mushrooms is starting to send out newsletters to all of their mushroom share members, so if you do not get a newsletter about your mushrooms please let me know and we will make sure to get you on the list.
