Farm Happenings for May 30, 2022

Posted on May 27th, 2022 by Martie Buzby

Kiwi berries will be ready for harvest in late September, but the anticipation is already beginning! The kiwi bloomed this week and pollination is occurring now! Kiwi are Dioecious, which means that each plant has only male flowers or only female flowers. This also means that insects are very helpful for pollination. Pollination will be complete in the next week and we are hoping for dry weather which helps the pollen move and not clump from being too wet. The small fruits will begin ro form in June and be full size by early July. Then we patiently wait for them to ripen over next three months!

By the way, we believe that Buzby Farm is the largest grower of kiwi in the state with 90 female vines and 18 male vines occupying 3/4 Acre. Why? Because we love them!
