The last CSA box of the season!!

Posted on October 25th, 2022 by Carly Richardson

Our 20 week CSA season is coming to an end this week, and as always it feels like the end to a long and exciting journey.

Right now we are looking back over the journey and reflecting as a team. Remembering the many interns, staff, volunteers, and amazing customers (like you!) who have journeyed along the way with us who made this season rich and delightful. We navigated a cold wet spring and patiently awaited the delays it caused in our favorite crops. Built new irrigation systems that helped us save water and precious time. Put up tunnels and trellises to protect and support our long season crops. Navigated heat waves and enjoyed the peppers eggplants and flowers that those heat waves gave an extra boost to. Planted, seeded, and planted some more, WEEDED, harvested and did our best in the midst it all to pause and relish in the beauty of tangible work and the gift to work (and eat) in away that brings us into close proximity to nature and the land.

We hope this season you enjoyed journeying alongside us, and felt some of that connection to the land and your place as you ate alongside the highs and lows of the season.

This week we will be sending out the final shares of the season and we hope you enjoy your final box of fall bounty (except for those of you who will be continuing on with us with the winter shares which will start next week, and have more shares to come - there is still a bit of space left for those who want to join you can sign up for the Winter CSA here).

We will be wrapping up the season with many of our fall favorites such as brussels sprouts, arugula, leeks, carrots, and a new one the Schwartzer Runder black radish! The black radish can be enjoyed many ways - it can be sliced thinly and tossed into a salad, but is particularly nice tossed in olive oil, salt and pepper and roasted or roasted and pureed into a soup.

This weeks special squash offerings will be a choice between three of our favorites. The Red Kuri, Delicata, and Blue Hubbard! We saved one of our absolute favorites for last! The Red Kuri and Blue Hubbard are fantastic squash for soups as they pairs well with creamy ingredients, great stuffed like an acorn squash, and also really nice chopped up and cooked into curries. The Delicata is a smaller squash and has a thin skin and can be cooked easily on stove top or in the oven. One of my favortie things is to slice it thin and sauté it alongside some onions and capers and toss it over pasta!

Finally, from all of us on the farm want to send you our thanks for making the choice to eat locally and seasonally these past 4 months and to care for the earth and your local place through this choice! It has been a pleasure to grow food for you all and we have deeply appreciated your commitment to A Rocha and your choice to eat in a flexible and unique way.

We hope to see you again next season!

Cheers!
