The last CSA box of the season!!

Posted on October 19th, 2021 by Carly Richardson

Wow its hard to believe but the CSA season is coming to an end, it feels like just last week we were planting our tomatoes and preparing for the summer and now the tomatoes (and all the rest of our summer crops) are coming out, cover crop is going in, and we're preparing to put the farm to rest for winter!

This week we will be sending out the final shares of the season and we hope you enjoy your final box of fall bounty (except for those of you who will be continuing on with us with the winter shares and have more shares to come - there is still a bit of space left for those who want to join).

We will be wrapping up the season with many of our fall favorites such as brussel sprouts, leeks, storage onions, Kale, Chard, squash and green tomatoes!

I love green tomatoes breaded and fried, the tartness of the tomato complimented by the crispy salty outside is fantastic. It's a southern classic recipe and fairly simple! The New York Times has a great recipe for them here. Green tomatoes are also often pickled, used to make chutney, or used for a spin off on salsa verde.

This week we will be sending out a surprise squash! It will be a medium size squash or (two smalls) and one of our many different varieties such as delicata, speckled pup, Hubbard... and more. Last week I tried a winter squash carbonara at a restaurant and could not wait to get home and recreate it! I tried it out Sunday following this recipe Squash Carbonara (but with a Kuri squash) and would highly recommend it!

We will be offering more in the extras section on Harvie this week for those interested in bulking out their pantries a bit for winter and so we hope you will take advantage of the Harvie extras feature this week! There will be saurkrautfermented hot sauceAurora apples and extra veggies that can hold for quite a long time such as cabbagebeetscarrotsleeksonions and of course winter squash (available as individuals by variety or as bulk 20lb boxes)!

This week since it is the final share of the season we can't resist offering flowers one last time. So available in extras you will see large Dahlia bouquets and we're crossing our fingers that the frost holds off for a few more days because our patch is lovely and still incredibly full and we would love to send you off with one last bouquet!

Finally, from all of us on the farm want to send you our thanks for making the choice to eat locally and seasonally these past 4 months and to care for the earth and your local place through this choice! It has been a pleasure to grow food for you all and we have deeply appreciated your commitment to A Rocha and your choice to eat in a flexible and unique way.

It has been an incredible, wild and beautiful first season for me here at A Rocha, and I am so thankful for all of you sharing delight and patience with me through all the highs and lows of the farm this year!

We hope to see you again next season!

Cheers!
