Farm Happening for August 18

Posted on August 15th, 2020 by Paul Neufeld

oh the beans, the cucumbers, the zucchini...  you've been good to us, but you are relentless!...  Hours of the week are devoted to harvesting these crops alone.  But... we'll miss you when you are gone, and the end is in sight.

The past week we've been busily transplanting fall lettuce, beets, fennel and spinach and fitting in some direct seeding.  There is no way to "catch up" on weeding at this time of year, but we made a good dent.

Our tomatoes should be producing heavily, but they've been frustratingly slow.  The plants are not as laden as we think they should be, and the fruit isn't always sizing up properly or ripening fully.  We are puzzled and disappointed - we'd like to give more generous amounts of tomatoes, but we don't have them to give.  It is really hard (impossible) to "nail" everything - we grow a crazy diversity of crops and each one has it's own needs and growing techniques.  Tomatoes are one of the trickier ones to do well but we keep persisting because the reward for success is very high!  Maybe next year will be a tomato year.

If you are keeping track, this has been week 10...  which means our CSA season is exactly half way through!  We are so glad you joined us for the first half, and there is so much more goodness to come between now and our final week!!  We are thankful for your support of our farm and your commitment to eating sustainably grown and seasonal vegetables.
