Farm Happenings for June 12, 2020

Posted on June 10th, 2020 by Paul Neufeld

Welcome to your first CSA share of the 2020 season!  The team has been working hard and things are starting to come together - sun, soil, seeds, water, sweat and now... vegetables for your table.  This is just a beginning - there is so much more to come.

This season has been a big "leap" for the farm - we grew our CSA program significantly, built 2 new greenhouses and started using the new Harvie Farm platform - all in the midst of the huge uncertainty that is a global pandemic!  Now the "rubber hits the road" and we hope we've grown enough food to feed this amazing community of eaters.  Many of you have been with the farm for many years, but there is also a significant number of newcomers.  Over the weeks ahead we'll share more about who we are, how we grow your food, and what A Rocha is all about.

Take a moment to review your box contents and to make swaps - we encourage you to try new things if you feel adventurous but we want your CSA box to provide you with maximum value so feel free to take full advantage of customizing to create the best box for your household tastes!  You have until WEDNESDAY at 10 PM to further customize your box.

For now let me just provide you a couple of important details that we trust will help to keep everyone safe and healthy in these days of Covid.

  • We will provide a means to wash or sanitize your hands at every CSA pickup location.  At the farm, there is a sink with water and soap against the wall of the barn right before you enter the CSA pickup area.  For the Vancouver pickup sites, we'll provide a spray bottle with an approved alcohol-based santizer.  Please clean your hands before you touch CSA bins.
  • Bring your own box/bags to transfer your CSA contents, leaving the A Rocha Rubbermaid bin behind at the pickup site.
  • Respect social distancing at the pickup.  If someone is already emptying their bin, please wait your turn, giving at least 2 meters of distance between you.
  • At the farm we will have a one-way flow within the barn.  Enter the barn through the south-facing door and exit through the west door (back toward the parking area).  Read the signage and follow the arrows to orient yourself
  • When you enter the barn you'll see labelled veggie boxes ahead of you and to the left.  Find your name, pick up the box, and continue to the left and around the corner to where we'll have some tables set up for you to empty your share.
  • Spray and wipe the packing table with sanitizing solution before you exit the barn.
  • Please note that the A Rocha centre is closed to the public during this pandemic season.  The playground is out-of-bounds and the other buildings and grounds are not open to visitors, but the farmers are working hard and are happy to engage with you if you flag us down for questions or introductions - we love to meet the folks we are feeding!
