Farmhouse Nashville was born out of necessity. As a mother of four young children, I desired to feed my family nourishing food, healing food, local food and affordable food. I was disheartened at the prices of organic and was determined not to feed my family food that was from factory farms and laden with chemicals, pesticides and shipped in from thousands of miles away! Was that even possible? Ten years ago I joined a raw milk co-op in West Nashville. It was a step in the right direction. Our raw milk farmer was an Old Order Mennonite farmer. We were thrilled to have found a source for affordable, clean, healthy milk. Finding organic produce in this same community was a lot harder than I envisioned. It is a myth that Amish and Mennonite farmers are organic. Only two farmers in this community are growing organically. After months of searching, I discovered Golden Rule farm growing against the "grain" of the community. They were convinced and convicted that organic farming was the only way to grow nourishing, flavorful foods that would heal not only our bodies, but the land. Our partnership was only the beginning of this story. We started offering CSA shares to friends and family in Lebanon, then Mount Juliet and today, we serve hundreds of families in Middle Tennessee. Our commitment to nutrient-dense produce, pasture raised eggs and meats is undeniable. We work together to offer food that is not only healthier but affordable for families. We believe that foods grown organically are naturally best, but we also know that foods raised without the use of pesticides, chemicals and herbicides are healing the land. We use trace minerals and nutrients to enrich the soil. Organic is good, but nutrient-dense is better!Several years ago, our family moved to a beautiful farm in Brush Creek, TN. We are currently raising Happy Hens on pasture and providing beautiful farm fresh eggs for the community and our members. During the season we will also be offering pastured meats available at our farm or ordered online in the farm store. We are excited to offer grass-fed, USDA certified meats available in individual cuts or packages - straight from the farm to your freezer! We are thrilled to offer our produce, eggs, meats and local artisan products to families in Middle Tennessee. The Regional Food Bank, in partnership with the Patroon Land Foundation, is developing a self-sustaining farm that grows large quantities of high quality vegetables every year. The Farm supplies the Food Bank and 1,000 participating agencies in 23 counties with diverse, fresh produce. Currently, we have grown over one million pounds of fresh produce. Although the majority of the Farm’s production is allocated to the Food Bank, we have sold 375,000 pounds of produce through a Community Supported Agriculture program and an on-site farm stand, both of which help to offset the Farm’s expenses.
By growing this produce, the Food Bank is able to fulfill the Patroon Land Foundation’s mission. This unique mission is to preserve the property as farm land and cultivate the land to grow and distribute produce, or the income from the sale of such produce, to feed the poor and hungry. The secondary purpose of the foundation is to offer educational opportunities for students and volunteers so they can learn about agriculture and participate in farming activities. Each year over 2,500 volunteers come to the Farm and help us in our efforts. Additionally, the Farm has worked with many interns and is always eager to develop these relationships in the future.
With help from so many volunteers, the Farm is truly an effort of the community at large. Private donors, corporations, and other organizations continue to support the Farm through financial and/or in-kind contributions. These contributions have allowed the Farm to develop the necessary infrastructure and purchase equipment to improve our operations and fulfill our mission.read more
