We use traditional European methods of biointensive, raised bed production while maximizing soil and plant health for nutrition and sustainability. No synthetic/chemical fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, or fungicide is ever used in any part of the process of growing your food. Everything we sell is grown by us, and we farm full-time, supporting ourselves and our four children through our farm business.
Growing practices at Broadfork utilize only ecological methods: compost, cover crops, organic fertilizer, and minerals are used to feed the soil that feeds our plants. Raised beds are used to prevent soil-compaction, allowing for happier plant roots. We use organic potting soil and fertilizer, as well as amendments like fish emulsion and sea minerals. No chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides are ever used on your food and we are Certified Naturally Grown (which follows the same national standards used for Organic Certification). We are also proud members of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming and Slow Food RVA. Janet and Dan both hold Bachelor’s Degrees in Biology from Davidson and Lafayette Colleges, respectively. Janet holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. We both thrive on putting our biology backgrounds to use in a farm setting and share a passion for farm education. read more

Farmer John Peterson got his start on the family farm in the 1950’s at age nine when he began milking and feeding the cows before and after school. In 1990, Farmer John transitioned the farm to organic vegetables and called it Angelic Organics. He wanted a natural system by which to farm, a system in which results were derived from the integrity of the soil—not from crop chemicals and petroleum based fertilizers.
As Angelic Organics got its footing in the early 90’s, Farmer John turned to the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model for a truly comprehensive approach to farming—to reunite people with the source of their food, to share the magnificent drama of farming, to give children the opportunity to see their vegetables grow. This completes the farming picture beautifully, providing deep satisfaction to shareholders and farmers alike.
You can learn much more about Angelic Organics and Farmer John by watching the feature documentary film The Real Dirt on Farmer John seen by millions throughout the world and winner of 31 film festival awards. read more

As new generations farmed and the years passed, changes were made. The work horses were traded for tractors, and for many years the farm produced potatoes and various grains while being farmed by Henry M.’s son, Bob VonThun Sr.
In 1986, Bob Jr. formed a partnership with his dad which enabled them to farm alongside each other until his dad retired in 2004. Together they added a farm market and pick your own fields to help change the farm’s focus to producing small fruits and vegetables. Today, our homegrown, fresh fruits and vegetables are sold both wholesale and retail through our Farm Markets and Farmers Markets throughout the state.
Five generations of VonThun’s, along with a hard working staff, have worked many long hours to bring you healthy and delicious Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables.
Over the years, the farm has become more diversified. Greenhouses were added in 1989, and u-pick berry crops were added. In 1995, Bob & Cindy started expanding the Fall season on the farm.
Along with growing fields of farm fresh produce, two apple orchards, and acres and acres of pumpkins, VonThun’s Farm is kept busy with a CSA Program, hayrides, a fun, interactive corn maze, and annual Fall family weekends. read more

Introducing us and our family: We are Trent and Lois Loewen. We have 7 active, growing children. We have 2 farm dogs, a happy population of cats, and a few laying hens. Our house looks 'lived in', and our yard looks 'used'. It is, too!
I, Lois, have grown a home garden most of the years since 2004, and have enjoyed cooking and preserving many vegetables and fruits. Our family has always been an important part of what we're doing, so they'd spend lots of time in the garden, too. Trent has always been interested in plants and growing, so we've dreamed, and wondered how it could work to grow for market.
In January of 2015, a seed catalog inspired me, and I started dreaming of garden, and dirt! It didn't take long until Trent was also enthused, and planning started! Vegetables, fruit, chickens, and turkeys... It all looked wonderful. We started growing with the large garden we already had, but changed to a more intensive bed system, allowing us to grow much more in our space. We were glad to have happy customers, and have enjoyed serving them.
We have since added more garden space, and it's fun to let our children choose a crop or plants that they will try growing. Some of they're choices have been pumpkins, edible squash, gourds, and tomatoes. We chose to quit doing chickens, for now, so we could put more into vegetables. We are also sorry that we won't be doing strawberry u-pick in 2019. That was a hard decision, but definitely we needed to make the change.
We also built a greenhouse in 2017, and we really enjoy growing with it! We are interested in working with extending our growing season in spring, and also in fall. For some crops the greenhouse will be helpful with that.
It is important to us to have delicious, wholesome food for our family, and we want to share that with our community, too.
Although not certified organic, we strive to grow our produce without the use of synthetic chemicals, and in a way that is sustainable and beneficial to the land. read more

Meet Sprout and Blossom Farm- Sprout and Blossom was started by Lyndsay in 2017. When the farm was first started it was nothing but an idea and big plot of grassy land. Over the four seasons of farming land leased on Vancouver Lake Lyndsay was able to expand the cultivated area to an acre of veggies, flowers, herbs and natives. Small scale farming is the future and one of the ways that we can combat the major climate and social issues revolving around Industrial Agriculture. Creating abundance both through food and community allows for a deep connection to each other and ourselves. Food is medicine, it is connection, it is life. https://www.sproutandblossomfarm.com/

In 1980, May, her husband Chue, their children and May’s mother immigrated to the United States from Loas as refugees. They found work farming conventionally, but when May’s mother was diagnosed with cancer after working with pesticides in the United States, May knew she needed to start farming organically.
May’s daughter Mhonpaj was connected with the Minnesota Food Association (MFA) and learned about their New Immigrant Agriculture Program (now called the Farmer Education Program). The Lee’s were accepted into the three-year program, which gave them access to the MFA’s 60-acre certified organic incubator farm, Big River Farm, and connected them with a Hmong-speaking coordinator who helped them find resources and answer questions about organic farming. Together they resolved issues ranging from drip irrigation setup to product liability insurance to insect control.
In 2010, the Lee’s “graduated” from the MFA program and went on to become the first Hmong-owned certified-organic farm in Minnesota. May and her family now farm leased land along the St. Croix River.
In addition to farming, May spends lots of time educating other growers about organic practices through the MFA and as a Master Gardener volunteer for Ramsey County. She and her family also share their culinary heritage through cooking demonstrations and classes. read more
