How We’re Making it Easy to Eat Local

Since the beginning of our work, we at Harvie realized one thing: to help local producers succeed, we had to make eating local food easy.

For many Pittsburghers, eating local presents obstacles: making time to go to a farmers market, driving across town to small businesses, or shopping outside of harvest season. For the past two-and-a-half years, we have been working towards the goal of eliminating these barriers and making it easy to eat local.

How have we worked towards this goal?

We’ve built out our warehouse in Lawrenceville with the ability to deliver almost 600 products.

We’ve connected members to over 100 different producers.

We’ve delivered local food to over three thousand members in the Pittsburgh community.

And now, we’ve reached the next step: Harvie Kitchen.

Run by Jordan Mason, Operations Manager, and Katie Geise, Sourcing Manager, the kitchen will allow us to reduce food waste, promote small farmers, and offer a wider range of products, all while building on our ultimate goal of making it really easy to support your local farmers.

Using our ability to source high-quality, local food, we’ll be able to turn raw, fresh ingredients into prepared meals. We’ll be able to provide hard-to-find products, fresh-cut cheeses, and much, much more. We will be able to save local produce that may be overlooked, thrown away, or wasted, which, in turn, will allow us to continue our work supporting small farmers and keeping food dollars in the Pittsburgh community.

All of this helps us reach our goal of making local food easy. By choosing a product from Harvie Kitchen, you’re supporting the fields of small farmers, keeping that product from going to waste. By choosing a product from Harvie Kitchen, you’re supporting local.

Harvie Kitchen currently operates out of Fulton Commons, a coworking kitchen in Manchester. Jordan has already been filling out the store with items like bulk olives and pickles, fresh-cut cheeses, and holiday specials such as pie dough and cheese plates. In the future, Jordan is hoping to stock the Harvie shelves with prepared foods, fresh meals, deli meats, and more. Read the full story of Harvie Kitchen here.
