Farm Happenings for October 17, 2023

Posted on October 14th, 2023 by John Zilnicki

Sorry for the delay in getting you this email but I was working into the night, sowing in a cover crop before the rain today.  All week we have been busy digging potatoes out of the ground and putting them into a large storage barn.  I then take a tractor with 2 giant ripper teeth that dig into the soil and help break up the compaction of the trucks.  I follow this with a disc and grain drill and sow in a rye cover crop that will help protect the soil for the winter.  Make sure your following @zilnickifarms on the socials to see all the action.  The cover crop with help stop erosion, build carbon, and increase the organic matter in the soil next year.  The potato harvest on this field was better then we were expecting and are extremely happy with its outcome.  However, we moved to another field that has been difficult to dig because of rocks, breakdowns, and compaction issues caused by heavy rains and deer pressure.  We have to take the good with the bad that's for sure.

Yes we have a little more rain this weekend and probably next weekend as well.  If this was winter this might be a lot of snow, so fingers crossed we see a pattern like this with some cold air for us snow lovers.

Have a great weekend!

Your farmer,

John
