Farm Happenings for May 25, 2021

Posted on May 21st, 2021 by John Zilnicki

Summer is here nice and early this year!  Yes this weather has been absolutely gorgeous, it has actually been too nice!  We are way below average in  rainfall levels for this time of year and with temps getting close to 90 this Sunday, young plants will be stressed to their max and fields are extremely dry.  We combat this by running irrigation on young plants, but even this is not enough.  With higher fuel costs (all costs) way higher then past years, many farmers we have talked to are extremely nervous about this start to our growing season.  But, we stay heavily optimistic and keep grinding to produce the best produce or Island can produce!

Memorial Day is next weekend and you may have a BBQ coming up.  Make sure to load up on burger meat, and all your other grilling essentials!

Strawberries are right around the corner and we can not wait!  We will have rhubarb and strawberries real soon so get ready for Strawberry rhubarb pie season!

Also, this week we have local tomatoes from Wickhams Farm, one of the oldest farms on Long Island.  They have a greenhouse devoted to early tomato production and we are so excited about fresh maters!

Enjoy this warm weather, plant a garden, and wash that pollen off your car!

Thank you again for being part of our farming family!
