Farm Happenings for October 6, 2020

Posted on October 4th, 2020 by John Zilnicki

Hope everyone had a great week!  Time is flying by on the farm and I'm sure its the same for you in your lives.

Farm Happenings This Week:

  • Potato Harvest 2020 is almost halfway through!
  • Parts of our farm yielded the worst potato crop my dad has ever experienced in 50 years of potato harvesting. (the result of the hot, drought, dry summer) Sad..
  • Fox took out some chickens.. security was beefed up!
  • Cauliflower is looking nice!
  • Broccoli has become our hardest crop to grow..
  • Cover crops are being planted! Planting a seed that grows over the fall and winter to hold the soil in place, build up organic matter, to help with future growing seasons.

I've heard from several CSA members they feel overwhelmed with some of the vegetables.  Our rule is, if your unsure what to do with it, make soup or chicken stock with them.  Fill a pot with water, throw a whole chicken in, and throw whatever vegetables in with it.  Add a little salt, pepper, garlic and let the magic happen.  We add the chicken stock to everything and take a shot every once in a while to boost our immune systems!
