Farm Happenings for May 26, 2020

Posted on May 23rd, 2020 by John Zilnicki

On to week 2 of our CSA!  Every week we try to improve efficiencies and I want to thank you for your understanding and patience.  By mid season we will be running like a finely tuned engine.  Thank you for sharing pictures on social media, saw some amazing meals and desserts made!  In the beginning of the growing season, the amount of produce available is scarce and relatively smaller than mid season produce; kale now vs kale in June or bunch of asparagus vs a head of cauliflower.  We will not truck in produce from NYC or other regions to beef up our CSA like some of our competitors.  We are committed to only offering 'local' grown on Long Island Produce (don't worry, in a few weeks your going to be saying, "um, wow, this kale is huge!)

Farm Happening this week:

-Although our first corn planting got hurt with the late frosts, our most recent plantings have come up beautifully!

-We planted tomatoes (Beefmaster, sweet 100, sunsugar, herilooms, many more), peppers (belle, frying cubanelles, chocolate pepper, jalapeno), eggplant (black beauty, fairy tail, little fingers), green and yellow zucchini

-We planted more than 10,000 cut flower starts this week for our Flower Shares!

-Vegetable, flower, and herb potted plants are looking amazing at the farmstand for you!

I've attached a 20 minute video from Youtube How To Store Your Food It has many great pointers to help store your bounty and save you money!  Also, if you have a trick up that helps increase storage life of produce please let me know and I will let all the CSA members know.  We are always looking for tips and techniques.

I hope you have a great Memorial Day Weekend!  If you haven't set up your preferences in your Harvie login please do so.

 Thank you and talk soon!
