Farm Happenings for August 1, 2020

New Potatoes this week!
Also, TOMATOES are picking up speed & BASIL is growing like crazy too! A good combination! If you haven't tried our cherry tomatoes & are on the fence about tomatoes, try ours! They turn tomato haters into lovers! My girls eat them like candy. It takes me offering my 2 year old the tomatoes a few times, but once she gives them a try she hooked all summer! The orange cherry tomato is our farms favourite, they're called "Sun Sugar" so it's an especially easy tomato to get my kiddos to eat!

A fail this week is our summer broccoli & cauliflower! This heat/drought is great for two things, weeds and pests! So the summer crop of broccoli and cauliflower are looking pretty rough, I'm starting to lose hope in them amounting to anything. Luckily, lots of fall broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage just went into the ground, and they always do better because they love cool weather, especially when they are forming heads. That crop that was just planted will mature later in September, so much nicer cooler temperatures then & hopefully we'll get some rain along the way too!

A win this week, our neighbour @foxleafarms just happened to dig a pond this spring for recreational use and are allowing us to use it to irrigate our garden! They are really saving us, because we were getting extremely behind in watering. Our well could only handle so much irrigation everyday, so we had to pick and choose what would get water. And some veggies are really starting to suffer, so hopefully this works out well!

In your boxes this week, you may find our neighbours at Footstep Organics' eggplant or zucchini. Ours isn't ready yet, so you will be able to enjoy these summer veggies from them!
