Ponderings of a farmer

If you've been reading my farm happenings, you will know some of the things that have failed or struggled. So as I think towards the future I am struck how important it is to diversify both my crops and my type of customers. When we set off at the beginning of the year we always think about beautiful straight lines of high yielding healthy plants, but then we think about the possibility of catastrophe. The reality of things is always more complex. There is a continuum of success and failure, we often fall somewhere in the middle when things finish up. Sometimes we get hung up on our failures, but usually when we go back and reconstruct what led to the failure, it was often outside of my control, or required foresight of something which I hadn't experienced before. I'm glad farming is year to year! I am definitely looking forward to the winter when we have more time to sit and think about our failures and how to address them. Every so often we need to take a break and think about our failure so we can try something different later.
